Mahjong Ball Two is digital art based on a photograph of mahjong tiles. Mahjong is a Chinese game of tiles, similar to the card game gin rummy. (Digital alteration of original photo or watercolor painting).

This array of mahjong tiles is in a three-dimensional ball clearing showing off the colors of blues and pinks and detailed images.

When I was a a child, my parents got together with 'cousins' for an evening of poker, canasta, and mahjong. When the gathering was at our house, I could hear the mahjong tiles being moved, and the calls of '1 bam, 4 crack, 5 dot' etc. It sounded like fun, but I was too young.

Later, when age and distance meant these monthly gatherings no longer happened, my mother decided to get another mahjong team together. We met sometimes weekly – whoever showed up. My mom, a sister, a sister-in-law. We had a lot of fun. This, too, in time fell apart. My mom went into long term care, people moved away.

My fascination with patterns stems from my love of numbers. While mathematics has been integral in my working career in finance, my other love is painting. My subject matter is inspired by photographs taken by friends and family. I see a photograph in terms of color, line and geometry. These qualities appeal to my sense of order and design (my fascination with numbers translated into art).
