Mahjong is an ancient Chinese game of tiles, similar to the card game gin rummy. (Digital alteration of original photo or watercolor painting)

My mother sometimes got together with 'cousins' for an evening of mahjong. When the gathering was at our house, I could hear the mahjong tiles being moved, and the calls of '1 bam, 4 crack, 5 dot' etc. It sounded like fun, but I was too young.

Years later, these monthly gatherings no longer happened, so my mother decided to get another mahjong team together. We met weekly – whoever showed up. My mom, a sister, a sister-in-law, a cousin, friend. We had a lot of fun. . My mom went into long term care, people moved away.

And yet again, years later, we tried again. This time at my house, whoever shows up on the last Sunday of every month. . My niece recently found a mahjong card from 1942. What fun! '1bam, 4 crack, 5 dot' etc.

My fascination with patterns stems from my love of numbers. While mathematics has been integral in my working career in finance, my other love is painting. My subject matter is inspired by photographs taken by friends and family. I see a photograph in terms of color, line and geometry. These qualities appeal to my sense of order and design (my fascination with numbers translated into art). There are times when a single photograph and the resulting abstract painting leads to another path -- and another painting -- and sometimes a third or fourth version from the same photo.
